WHY IS MENTAL HEALTH MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER?

Why is Mental health care more important than ever?

The world has been dealing with the issue of trying to live our life the fullest while a global pandemic happens for more than a year. It is clearly (and I'm talking from a personal background as well) that trying our hardest for maintaining the same amount of productivity as before has led a negative slope in the comparison between our happiness and productivity.

Let's have a closer example to explain this situation. I´m very fortunate to be studying in one of the greatest universities around the country, and I acknowledge my privilege as knowing the commodities that I have as a person just for studying in this University. I was actually pretty happy with assisting in lessons, sitting in a classroom full of people and having a standard interaction with the ones that surrounded me at that point. On March 13th, my perspective and perception of life changed completely, I consider myself a social person, I love to have social interactions and (being honest) I´m actually at my best when I share different moments with people, so jumping to that to then having more than six months of total self isolation was one of the most confusing and difficult things that my brain has processed.

Almost a year and a half later, I remember that experience as terrifying, but since then, I´ve gained enough self confidence in order to research and investigate with supporting data if the rest of the world was feeling the same as I did during that time.

So let's bring some data into the discussion, According to (Gunnell, D 2020) there was a general decline of suicide rates around the world, with  5,1% decrease from 2019. However the rate increased almost 20% between 15-25 years old. Also its very important to mention the fact that suicide rates increased a 4,2% in third world countries while it decreased 9,2% in the first world ones.

When I first read this data it led me to the conclusion of how my feelings were more general than what I thought, and how important it is today (maybe more than any before) to take care of ourselves and embrace our feelings how they come. I wanted to take this conversation also into the fact of how important it is to take care of others in necessity, especially during these times. Even though mental health is a very serious matter and deserves the properly attention, most of humans (specially in Colombia) had to get through with more than their feelings during these times so, I'm pretty sure we'll find someway to help someone while we take care of ourselves.
